DOES YOUR MOTHER-OF-THE-GROOM KNOW HER DUTIES?

Updated: May 14, 2019

Being a mother is a truly wonderful honor – so you surely understand how proud and happy the mother-of-the-groom must be to see her son getting married. Is she aware of her duties? If not, here are some of the things you (and the mother-of-the-groom) should know about the tasks traditionally associated with her role.

· Once you announce your engagement, the mother-of-the-groom is expected to call your parents and show her excitement about the upcoming wedding. Also, an engagement party is traditionally held for the bride to be introduced to the groom’s side of the family – and the mother-of-the-groom should be the one to coordinate this event.

· When your wedding registry is ready, the mother-of-the-groom should be among the people to spread the word about where you are registered. Since it is considered tacky for you to do this on the invitations (but ok to post on your wedding website), you will need your mother, the mother-of-the-groom, the maid-of-honor and the other close members of the wedding party to assist.

· Budget-wise, the parents of the groom traditionally pay for the wedding reception. Since this is not compulsory these days, the mother-of-the-groom can simply offer the family’s financial help, when needed.

· At the wedding, the mother-of-the-groom is expected to be seated at the parents’ table, to stand in the receiving line (if there is one), to dance with the groom during their special moment and, in general, to socialize with the guests and help whenever needed.
